Garmin, a multinational technology company, has acquired a hanger and office complex at the Mesa Gateway Airport as the company expands its aviation division in Arizona.

Garmin (NYSE: GRMN) announced this week that it will use the two adjacent hangars – totaling around 75,000 square feet – to expand the company's capacity for its aircraft certification and flight test organizations.

“The capabilities this location will provide are instrumental in extending aircraft airworthiness approvals and market coverage for our product lines,” Phil Straub, Garmin’s executive vice president and managing director of aviation, said in a statement. “This expansion represents Garmin's continued investment in infrastructure that supports growth and innovation in our aviation business segment."

The company's aviation division creates a variety of technologies for all different sizes and varieties of aircraft.

Garmin said it will have around 75 employees in the new facility.

Garmin, which has existing flight operations centers in New Century, Kansas, and Salem, Oregon, said it chose Phoenix for the new facility because of Mesa Gateway’s infrastructure – including the two runways over 10,000 feet in length – as well as with generally clear weather throughout the year, which are ideal for flight operations.

"Garmin's decision to establish a new testing and certification facility at Mesa Gateway Airport is a strong testament to the reputation the Airport has earned as a premier destination for aerospace innovation,” J. Brian O'Neill, the CEO and executive director of the Mesa Gateway Airport Authority, said in a statement. “Gateway Airport provides exceptional infrastructure, a talented and experienced local workforce, and an environment that fosters growth and creativity.”

Garmin has a long history working in Arizona. The company started working in Tempe more than 25 years ago and later moved that facility to Chandler. Then in 2019, Garmin acquired AeroData, which is headquartered in Scottsdale. The company said having years of experience in the market will help Garmin hire experienced employees for its engineering, aircraft airworthiness approvals and flight test teams in Mesa.

Final Thoughts:
Garmin’s new aviation testing and certification facility at Mesa Gateway Airport reinforces Arizona’s growing aerospace and aviation presence. With expanded hangar space, strong airport infrastructure, and favorable flying conditions, Mesa continues to attract advanced technology and aviation companies investing in long-term innovation and workforce growth.
