Arizona is reaching for the stars: The International Dark Sky Discovery Center is under construction in Fountain Hills.

Slated to open in fall 2025, the $28 million observatory and science center will encompass 23,000 square feet and feature the largest telescope in metro Phoenix, a hyperspace planetarium, a theater, an Einstein exploration station and more.

The center’s mission? To educate visitors, support scientific research and promote astrotourism, all while raising awareness of how dark skies benefit human health, wildlife and the environment.

Here's a construction update for the International Dark Sky Discovery Center, plus how you can attend the Fountain Hills Dark Sky Festival 2025.

What will the Fountain Hills Discovery Center offer?

We talked to Joe Bill, president of the Fountain Hills International Dark Sky Discovery Center, who said the center will be a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to connecting the night sky to life on Earth. It will offer STEM education and immersive experiences for all ages, focusing on astronomy and the impact of excessive outdoor lighting on human health, wildlife and the environment.

Key features include:

  • Dark Sky Observatory: With the largest telescope in greater Phoenix.
  • Hyperspace Planetarium: An advanced tilted dome with digital technology.
  • Inspiration Theater: A 150-seat tiered auditorium and cutting-edge projection systems.
  • Night Sky Exhibit Hall: Showcasing interactive exhibits on light pollution.
  • Einstein Exploration Station: For hands-on learning about the physics of light.

“In addition to these five major components, the facility will include a gift shop, snack station, classrooms and a private stargazing terrace,” Bill said.

So far, $21 million has been raised to fund the $28 million project, which is targeted to open in the fall of 2025. Ticket prices and operating hours are still being finalized.

When will the International Dark Sky Discovery Center open?

A fall 2025 opening is targeted.

“We are planning a soft opening in October or November,” Bill said.

Is Fountain Hills a dark sky city?

Yes. The International Dark-Sky Foundation designated Fountain Hills as an International Dark Sky Community in 2018, a status the town began pursuing in 2015.

“After a three-year effort, this prestigious designation was achieved in January 2018,” said Bill. “Because this is so rare near a major metropolitan area, the accomplishment received national and international attention.

"That led to a group of community leaders deciding to develop a discovery center that includes dark sky preservation as part of its mission and five major components to provide extensive STEM science experiences.”

Final Thoughts: A Stellar Addition to Arizona’s Dark Sky Legacy

With the International Dark Sky Discovery Center set to open in fall 2025, Fountain Hills is cementing its reputation as a world-class destination for stargazers, scientists, and curious minds alike. This $28 million project isn’t just about astronomy—it’s about education, conservation, and inspiring future generations to look up and wonder.

As light pollution threatens dark skies worldwide, this observatory will serve as a beacon of awareness, highlighting the importance of preserving our celestial view. Whether you’re a seasoned astronomer, a student of science, or a visitor eager for a cosmic experience, this center promises to be a must-visit destination.

Mark your calendars—Arizona’s journey to the stars is just beginning.
